If you’ve ever wondered what an osteopathic practitioner actually does — or whether it could help your pain — you’re not alone. Osteopathy is a hands-on, whole-body approach to health care that focuses on how the body’s structure affects its function. Osteopathic Manual Practitioners assess and treat the body’s tissues, joints, muscles, fascia, and organs using techniques like gentle joint mobilizations, myofascial release, muscle energy technique, cranial therapy, and visceral manipulation.
Osteopathy doesn’t just chase symptoms — it looks for the root cause. For example, persistent knee pain might actually stem from a misaligned pelvis or restricted ankle mobility. This broader lens is what makes osteopathy so effective for complex or chronic issues that haven’t fully responded to other treatments. A growing body of research supports this model. For example, a 2023 systematic review in the Journal of Bodywork and Movement Therapies concluded that osteopathic manual treatment was effective in reducing pain and improving function in chronic low back pain patients. Another study in the International Journal of Osteopathic Medicine emphasized osteopathy’s ability to enhance parasympathetic tone and reduce stress-related symptoms.
For first-time patients, an osteopathic treatment typically begins with a detailed history and whole-body assessment. Even if you come in for shoulder pain, we’ll likely check your spine, hips, and even your breathing mechanics — because everything in the body is connected. Treatments are usually gentle and relaxing, and many people report feeling lighter, looser, or more mobile right away. Osteopathy is suitable for all ages, from infants to seniors. Katharine’s Bio
With over 20 years of full-time clinic experience, I bring depth, precision, and a strong clinical foundation to every treatment. I’ve taught at an osteopathic college, supervised in-clinic training, advised student theses, and chaired international osteopathic juries. I believe in a multidisciplinary approach to care, including client education based on the biopsychosocial model of pain and referrals when needed. I have a wide network of trusted specialists — including sports medicine physicians, functional neurologists, and vestibular physiotherapists — to ensure my clients receive comprehensive support. I also believe wholeheartedly in the importance of exercise to help manage and resolve pain. Manual therapy, when combined with movement and education, is where the real change happens. I stay current through ongoing continuing education to offer thoughtful, evidence-informed treatment.
